Two types of brake systems are popular in automobile nowadays. Air brake system and Hydraulic brake system.

The air over hydraulic brakes is also used in vehicles.


Hydraulic Brake System

The hydraulic brake system is used in smaller passenger vehicles. The hydraulic brake system uses a fluid, which stays brake lines.  So there is no delay in the brake application provided the fluid level is adequate.

Hydraulic brakes are expensive to operate because you have to refill the fluid when it leaks. Hydraulic brakes mostly found in small vehicles whereas air brakes are popular in commercial large vehicles.

Air Brake System

The air brake system uses compressed air to operate the brake system. There is a split second delay in air brake application, which is air travel time from tanks to brake chambers.

Air is free, the compressor keeps filling the air tanks.

What is a “Z”  endorsement?

The “Z” endorsement is an additional privilege on your driving license, which allows you to drive a vehicle equipped with air brakes.

How to obtain “Z”  endorsement?

To get “Z” endorsement on your license, you have to pass two tests.

  1. Air brake knowledge test.
  2. 7 step air brake test.

7 step air brake test

Air brake knowledge test includes multiple choice questions and answers. These questions are based on basic operational knowledge of the air brake system.

Remember these are sample questions and answers, not the actual test.

Key points to remember

Air loss rate straight truck/bus, tractor-trailer, tractor, and two trailers should not be more than 3, 4, and 6psi respectively.

Trailer valve automatically closes at 45psi.

Low air warning device: 55psi.

Spring brake application comes up automatically at 60psi.

The minimum governor cut in at 80psi. (Cut in must be 20psi to 25psi less than cut out pressure).

Minimum air pressure to perform brake checks is on or over 90psi.

Air pressure build-up: 85psi to 100psi within 2 minutes engine running at 600 to 900rpm.
